In 1840, Edward P. Allis Co., Fraser and Chalmers Company and Gates Iron Works combined resources to officially incorporate the Allis Chalmers company. However, it was in 1914 that the Allis Chalmers Company entered into the farm equipment business. Their bright orange tractors were very distinct. Much of the early tractor production was done in Milwaukee, however, with much demand, production factories soon spread to West Allis, Wisconsin, LaPorte, Indiana, Topeka, Kansas, Independence, Missouri, Appleton, Wisconsin and Port Washington, Wisconsin.
At that time, there was a combined Allis Chalmers production of agricultural Tractors, farm implements, Industrial Tractors, Gleaner Combines, Crushing and screening equipment, and Simplicity Garden Tractors.
The 15-30 hp Allis-Chalmers was introduced in 1914, followed by the 15 to 30 hp Allis tractor in 1920. This latter tractor was further upgraded, and in 1920 it was sold as a 18-30 hp tractor. However, when the great depression followed a few years later, this upgraded Allis tractor production was halted with only 235 being sold. However, within a few years production came to a halt when the economy went into a depression. Production restarted, and the Allis-Chalmers Model 20-35 (also known as the Model E) was introduced in 1929. This model was sold for two (2) years.
The 1920 depression was followed by the stock market crash in 1929, which caused many tractor manufactures to cease operations. This was disastrous to many manufactures, and beneficial to a few. With its great financial status. Allis Chalmers was able to acquire the company Advance-Rumely Thresher Company in 1931. This enabled it to expand its production to include tillage implements and harvesters This expansion enabled Allis-Chalmers to grow financially, and at that time was ranked as the fourth largest farm equipment maker in the United States.
Allis Chalmers Technological and Historical Highlights includes:-
• Low Pressure Tires were first introduced by Allis-Chalmers farm tractor Model U which was built between 1929 to 1952. Approximately twenty thousand tractors were manufactured.
• During the 1930s the United Tractor and Equipment Company of Chicago, Illinois sought Allis-Chalmers's expertise to develop the tractor Models U and UC. These would prove to be very popular tractors.
• Total tractor production in the late 1930s, enabled Allis-Chalmers to provide approximately thirteen (13) percent of the US tractor market.
• The 1948 WD tractor was the first to have power-adjustable rear wheels
• The first agriculture tractor to be outfitted with a turbocharger was the Allis Chalmers's Diesel D-19
After the establishment of the agriculture tractor, the Allis Chalmers Company turned to construction equipment. At that time, Monarch Tractor Company was already producing crawler tractors for construction purposes. In 1928 Allis-Chalmers bought the Monarch Tractor Company and continued and further developed its line of crawler tractors. Of special importance is the HD-15 which was produced in 1951. This was the first crawler tractor available with a torque converter drive.
Allis Chalmers continued its tractor, crawler, and agricultural implements production. However, Allis-Chalmers, like so many other companies, became financially strapped and was eventually forced to sell the farm equipment division to K-H-Deutz AG of Germany in 1985. Deutz Ag was sold to AGCO Inc. in 1990. Due to restructuring of the Allis lines of machines, the factories were closed down in 1988
However, the new parent company, AGCO has expanded the farm equipment business, primarily in Europe and South America (with large production facilities in Brazil). In 2004 AGCO entered the Fortune 500 list of America's largest companies.
With thousands of satisfied Allis Chalmers customers in North America, the Allis line of tractors, crawlers and other equipment continue to operate. Spares are supplied by AGCO, salvage yards, and many aftermarket produces including AI Products.
