Easy steps to rebuild a drum brake
Brakes are a very important part of your vehicle. If gone wrong, it can wreck havoc for your car. Many of the cars use drum brakes on the rear. Drum brakes have the brake pads located inside a drum , which is again located on the wheel hub. This wheel hub presses out against the inside of the drum as you engage the brakes. If you want to rebuild drum brakes, it is only a matter of a few hours.
Let us take a look at how to rebuild drum brakes:
Stationing the car: You must park the car in second gear on a flat ground and ensure that the emergency brake is on.
Lug nuts: You need to loosen the lug nuts that are placed on the rear tires.
Jacking up: You must jack up the rear of the car and place jack stand underneath the external frame. After having done that, slowly lower the frame onto the jack stands. If you are not sure then you may check with the car manuals to see where exactly to place the jack and the jack stand.
Remove lug nuts: You had loosened the lug nuts earlier, now you need to remove them from the rear wheels and detach the tyres from the car.
Remove drum brake: Now you need to detach the drum brakes from the wheel hub. You may have to pull back the brake shoes a little to enable the drum brakes to slide off. To pull back the brake shoes, you must take out the rubber plug from behind the brake. Now, with the help of a flathead screw driver loosen the socket within the drum. You may find an upoward motion easy. Continue with the motion until the drum is taken out.
Cleaning: Using a brake wash, clean the drum brakes. Make sure you use precautions like gloves as well as an eye wear to avoid any direct contact with the drum. This caution must be maintained as the drum may contain asbestos, which is carcinogenic.
Disconnect other parts: The pins placed on the top portion of the brakes and the shoe retracting spring must be detached from each other. Once this is done, repeat the same process for the springs at the bottom. Use a brake removal tool designed to remove brake springs.
Metal Tab: You must find the auto-adjuster tab which is actually a tiny metal tab located at the base of the wheel hub. Use a pair of pliers to lift it. Now, with the help of a screwdriver detach the auto-adjuster cable.
Secondary brake removal: Detach the secondary braking shoe from the parking brake cable by raising the primary braking shoe.
More cleaning: You must use a brake wash to clean the wheel hub. Take care of the same safety measures as earlier.
Grease aplication: Pour brake grease at the point where the brake shoes make contact with the wheel hub.
Brake pads: Position the brake pads in the same place as the old pads.
Reassembling: Reverse the process that you used to remove the drum brake and this will automatically reassemble it.
Put tyres back: Tighten the tyres back to the wheel hubs with lug nuts. Don't overuse force to tighten. Tighten only till you feel the resistence.
Jack up the car: The final step is to jack up the car and slowly remove the jack stands. Now lower the car to the ground making the lug nuts firm.

Drum Brake $70.1 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles A drum brake is a brake in which the friction is caused by a set of shoes or pads that press against a rotating drumshaped surface. The term drum brake usually means a brake in which shoes press on the inner surface of the drum. When shoes press on the outside of the drum, it is usually called a clasp brake. Where the drum is pinched between two shoes, similar to a conventional disk brake, it is sometimes called a pinch drum brake, although such brakes are relatively rare. A related type of brake uses a flexible belt or band wrapping around the outside of a drum, called a band brake.
