Bump stops, or rubber bumpers, function like standard door stops. On your vehicle - be it car, truck or S.U.V. - they are simply pieces of vulcanized rubber or plastic that can take shock absorption or a beating, which are then bonded to metal plates that next in line are simply attached to your trucks chassis or your cars body. Thus they limit the upward travel of the front or rear axle control arms to in essence work to limit front, rear axle or control arm travel and range of motion to thus prevent the suspension members from striking the auto frame or body.
On the front suspension, you can find that they are commonly mounted on the chassis in most trucks below the upper control arm or rams or below a frame section. On trucks where rear ends use leaf springs you will often and generally find bump stops between the axle and chassis. These in turn will be bolted to either the chassis or axle, all depending on the brand, make and model of your truck or trucks.
When is replacement a concern? As a motorist you will find that they need replacement when it becomes apparent that they are becoming un-bonded from their metal plates. It is relatively easy to tell when the bonding is failing simply by examining and pulling away the bump stop. If you note or notice that if the rubber pulls away from the edge of the metal plate, then it is time for that automotive component to be replaced on your truck
Most bump stops are secured with a single stud on the back side of the mounting plate. Some bump stops have ears on the plate and even use two "through-bolts".
Lastly it can be said and noted by experienced auto and truck mechanics that the replacement procedure and procedures are different for both front and rear bump stops.
