Buying your first tractor: What to look out for
Are you going to buy a used tractor? have a look at the following checklist to help you to find the best fit for the job you need to do make and research you should do are no different from those you would make when buying a new piece of farm machinery. Once you have identified what you need to tractor to do then you may want to check if your favourite brand name produces it. If there is a make of tractor that has served you well over the years then stick with that. Whatever tractor you choose it is necessary to check the availability and cost of spares and to know whether there is some expertise in the servicing of your particular tractor available nearby; this could save you a lot of time and money over the life of the tractor.
Once you have identified what you need then you may want to check if your favorite brand name produces it. For example, you may already have a brand name of tractor that you have owned before or feel confident in and know to be reliable.
All the big brand names are available online; John Deere, Massey Ferguson New Holland, Case IH and others can all be found. The 540 rpm PTO is the most common but more and more implements are using the 1000 rpm PTOs. In the 1970s there was a large amount of very low-priced, imported tractors distributed in the US by some of the larger mass merchandisers. On the other hand if you have side-hills to traverse, like we do in the Northwest, you may be slightly displeased with your nifty hi-crop Farmall or AC (did I mention terrified every time you have to use it because of the deadly possibly of a hillside rollover).
