Many people claim one elliptical machine is much better than another. The Internet is full of such reviews offering "expert" views on the best elliptical trainers, in terms of front and rear drive housings. In years past, the rear wheel models were considered far superior to any front wheel models. The rear wheel models were often only created by higher end fitness companies like Precor. Then, a shift occurred in high end elliptical machines. When Vision Fitness and Octane chose to create a front wheel assembly for their newest elliptical models, the rear wheel rule was halted.
Today, there are elliptical machines to fit every budget in both rear and front wheel models. The position of the wheel does not matter hugely in the effect of the machine on the body, but can affect how the user feels while on the machine. For people with shorter stride lengths, the area between the wheel and the foot pedals can be smaller. Longer strides, as taller people may have, tend to feel cramped on the front wheel models because there is not enough room for the legs to fully extend before the wheel comes around for another rotation.
Due to the stride difference, there is a small shift in muscle usage between the rear wheel models and the front wheel models. The front wheel will cause the legs to turn over at a steeper angle which can cause the legs to move in a stair stepper like fashion. The rear wheel housing allows for a longer stride, which tends to feel more like jogging. The two models were created, not to confuse the consumer, but due to a patent dispute with the original manufacturer Kettler. They patented the rear wheel model and many fitness companies just decided to create the front wheel model instead of trying to work around the patent.
Taking Apart the Models
Moving away from feel on the body, the front and rear wheeled elliptical can cause a hugely different feel on the wallet. The rear drive set-up requires fewer parts. This means there is less chance repair service will be needed for a rear drive elliptical trainer. Front drive models also tend to mount the pedals on moving rails with balls that can wear out with repeated use.
The position of the handlebars is another thing to consider before buying either a front or rear drive elliptical machine. Some lower end front drive ellipticals will position the handles directly over the pedals. Movement may be restricted to the point that use is uncomfortable.
In the end, buying an elliptical machine is more about good quality parts than the position of the drive. There are many moderately priced elliptical machines that work with a similar movement and flow when compared to gym models. The consumer should keep in mind, however, that gym model ellipticals can cost $1000 or more because they are made to withstand constant use. The best solution is to try out both rear drive and front drive ellipticals before settling for the one you are going to buy.
