These days when there has been an onslaught of touchscreens, it's a refreshing change to use and review a pure QWERTY keypad device - the Nokia E72. The front panel has a wide screen with the ambient light sensor and secondary camera at the top right. Below the screen is the control key cluster with the D-pad sporting an optical trackpad in the middle. The top row has two soft keys on the left and right. In the middle there are two elongated keys. These are highlighted with a metallic rim around them. The left key gives access to home and calendar and the right one to contacts and Email.
Below them on the third row are the calling and call end keys on the left and right respectively. The optical trackpad has great touch sensitivity but we still preferred using the direction keys. The QWERTY keypad rests below the calling keys and has small, compact yet comfortable to use keys. The keys in the bottom row of the keypad also double up as shortcut keys. For instance the symbol key works for Bluetooth, space for torch and control for mute. The left panel has slots for USB and microSD card, while the right has the volume keys with the voice command key in the middle. The back panel sports a 5.0-megapixel camera with flash on the right and the loudspeaker grill on the left. The metal battery cover with its linear design adds to the overall visual appeal of the phone.
The Nokia E72 has a dual screen -- similar to the E71, where one can set two screens by customising relevant shortcuts and features for professional and personal fronts. You can easily toggle between the two. It also comes with the Nokia Email service that gives you great features with comfortable interface. The device is pre-loaded with Ovi Store and Nokia Music Store. Other applications include AutoProfiles for activating profiles automatically or vice versa, Call Back, Psolic World Traveller, Birthday Launcher and advanced communication manager.
Connectivity options in the E72 include Wi-Fi and GPS with A-GPS support. Setting up a Wi-Fi connection is easy. As far as GPS is concerned, the phone gets a first lock quickly. Ovi Maps give both driving and pedestrian navigation. However, the navigation license is valid only for a limited period of time. Quick Office lets you create and edit documents, workbooks and presentations, which is more convenient than having to buy the upgrade. Adobe Reader comes handy for viewing PDF files.
The device also has a text and card reader that enables you to transcribe content of a card or a sheet of paper by clicking its picture. Other utility options include wireless presenter, font magnifier, dictionary and active notes.
