If you have a garden tractor, then at one time or another you'll be in need of some tractor parts.
It's a fact in this day and age, tractors, and garden tractors, will experience breakage due to stress, operator mistakes, overwork, or just plain age. When that happens, you'll be glad to know that you can find the parts you need.
Tractor Parts - Aftermarket and Original
Even if your garden tractor is decades old, there are more suppliers today than ever before for parts to fit your beast.
These parts may have been designed and/or built aftermarket, or even better, you may even be able to find parts that were original to your machine.
For example, I have a Case 444 garden tractor that is 35 years old. There are not a lot of manufacturers making tractor parts for my baby, but I keep an eye on eBay. Fairly often I will find someone parting out an older garden tractor, so I can find original parts that fit, for a pretty reasonable price.
Another avenue for parts is the aftermarket industry. Many people will buy an older garden tractor and "soup it up", either for racing or just because they can. There are still Motorheads out there!
There are now tractor parts in production that include performance enhancements and improvements. (If you get a chance to see the Garden Tractor Pulls at some State Fairs, give it a try - It's fun!)
What Kind of Tractor Parts Can You Find?
Actually, there are quite a few parts available today, even, as an example, for your 1939 IH Farmall H tractor. You will be able to find new tractor parts that are new, used and/or rebuilt.
Nostalgia seekers and antiques collectors are making the older tractors particularly desirable, and a strong parts market has developed. You can find tractor manuals, decals with the original logos, seats, steering wheels and accessories for new as well as older models such as John Deere, International Harvester, Ford, Massey Ferguson, Allis-Chalmers, Case, Oliver and more.
One reason why the older garden tractors have become so popular, too, is because they are not the complicated, computer-operated tractors of today.
Many men, myself included, like to be able to pull up the hood and work on our own machines. This can be simple maintenance, improving horsepower or just plain "fixing what's broke." Somehow, being able to find a problem on my garden tractor and fix it myself is empowering.
The Internet Opens Up Many Possibilities
With the availability of eBay and UPS, it's now possible to buy your needed tractor parts and have them shipped to your door.
This is something that was pretty tough to do, even 20 years ago!
Today you can shop online, look at pictures of tractor parts, ask questions, and pretty much solve your tractor problem without having to drive to the implement dealer or take your tractor to the shop.
The internet allows you to research. You can read through blogs and forums and explore whether anyone else has had the same issue your tractor is having. Often you can find the name of the part you need, or how to correctly adjust the one you may have bought. You may find quite a wealth of information out there on your particular problem!
I know that on several occasions I've found answers to tractor parts questions as well as car issues online, and usually the research is free. (There are some paid forums you can join online. For example, I've gotten some great help from the Mazda car forum I belong to, but it requires a paid subscription.)
Even when shopping for the tractor parts I need, I can comparison shop and see if one dealer or supplier has the part cheaper, or with better quality than another.
Of course, it's always a good idea to check the online reviews - those can save you a lot of time and hassle when shopping for tractor parts!
