The most common type of leak that can be found from a car by far is engine oil leak. This can be normally seen as you pull into your driveway, you will notice that the spot where you parked your car the night before has an evidence of few drops of black oil.
After that you will start to see bigger and larger spots of black oil after few days and this confirms that the leak is definitely from your car.
It is a good practice to check the fluid levels in your car regularly, at least once a month, whether by yourself or by your mechanic. This is because, for example, if the transmission fluid leak until there is not enough fluid in the transmission, air will go into the transmission system and the hydraulic components in the system could get damage.
In order to ensure that the engine has sufficient oil level to run, you can measure the level with the engine oil dipstick. If you cannot get any indication on the dipstick, add some engine oil before you run the engine.
If the level is at "Add Oil" mark, top up the oil with the left over oil that you keep from the last service or you can drive to the nearest station or workshop to top up the engine oil. You have either a critical oil leak or you have not checked the level for a long time if it requires two or three quarts of oil to bring up the engine oil level to where it should be.
If you know that you have an oil leak but you are not sure whether the leak comes from the power-steering system, the transmission system or from the engine, what you can do is to carefully check the power-steering fluid, the engine oil and the transmission oil levels every day for a duration of one week. This method can be used only for heavy leaks but for smaller leaks or seepage, just see your mechanic for repair because it is difficult to find the actual source from the small leaks.
Another conventional way is by using a sheet of newspaper or a large piece of cardboard and if possible, use white cardboard. After you park your car and you are not planning to use it again for the night, place the newspaper or cardboard under the car at the area where you suspect the leaks come from. Hold the newspaper or cardboard with rocks in case the wind will blow them away.
Pull out the newspaper or cardboard away the next morning and splash a few drops of the engine oil, the transmission oil and the power-steering fluid from their respective dipsticks onto the newspaper or cardboard. Compare all the oils and you will find that the engine oil color is black, the transmission oil will be dark red or dark brown or might also be dark green. If you cannot differentiate the colors, just bring the newspaper or cardboard together with the car to your mechanic.
Apart from the above, you can also use foot powder which can normally be found in your medicine cabinet as a trace dye. First, make sure the engine is as clean as possible and then let the engine dry. After that spray the area where you suspect the leaks are from with the foot powder. The foot powder will stick to the engine and the cover metal in the form of white film. Drive the car on clean dry roads slowly so you will not mess up the foot powder. If you are lucky, you will see a black path down the side of the engine. If you suspect the leaks are from the intake manifold or the head gaskets, repeat the steps above.
