So here you have purchased this $1600 Pro-level DSLR Camera body and you are wondering why people like me are saying, "Whenever you can shoot exclusively in the Manual Mode." After all, the camera comes with these automatic modes and the manual tells you how great these modes work in these situations. But how well do you work with the automatic modes? Let's take a look at some of the reasons and benefits of shooting in the Manual Mode.
First, on the surface, it seems that we only have control over shutter speed and aperture setting in the Manual Mode. But this overlooks the ISO setting. As a general rule, you want to use the lowest ISO setting possible. While higher ISO settings allow us to shoot in lower light it adds noise to the picture. There are many ways around the noise issue and they all have different levels of effectiveness but the one thing in common with all of them is they require post processing work to get anything like acceptable results. So to keep your workload down, always use the lowest possible ISO.
Second, once I have to choose shutter speeds and aperture settings, my creative juices start to flow. At what shutter speed will I get motion blur? What shutter speed freezes everything? Will the wide open aperture of this lens give me the Bokeh effect I'm looking for or do I need a longer, faster lens? Should I use a tripod to enable the use of the smallest aperture and a super slow shutter speed? This helps to solidify my composition and the feelings I want to this capture to emote.
By having this workflow, I become more involved in the composition and therefore my images improve. Additionally, I am more aware of what is happening to the light as my shooting progresses. The camera is a lot more sensitive to changes in light than our eye is and this keeps me in tune to what is going on around me.
So for the next five or six hikes, try shooting exclusively in the Manual Mode while keeping the above exposure and composition questions in mind. You will be glad you did.
