How does one go out antiquing and determine the value of the piece discovered? Is it helpful to carry a guide in your hand-maybe. You can find precisely the piece you wish to track down in a field guide, and go out looking for it.
Another approach is to go a bit deeper. What makes the antique valuable, and who decided this was so? Are you looking for the most commercially valuable antique, or are you searching for the value within the physical object?
A dusty and used piece of crockery can be worth much more than a piece of crockery that is clean, brand new and fresh out of a factory. Why is this so?
Of course, it is about the intrinsic experience of the antique. It is about the history and use of a time that may have come and gone.
An antique that was painstakingly produced by hand, for the use of the maker, and having provided support to the everyday life of the family, represents a value of aesthetics rather than utility.
With this in mind, you can use your personal genius in your search for antiques, that becomes a world unto itself. Your journeys into collectibles can open the door to a connection to the people and places of the past.
In Upstate New York and Pennsylvania, one can follow beautiful country roads to towns that haven't changed much in 200 years. The collectibles that are found can be quite old, and we have come across old volumes of books that are over 100 years old and far out of print. The authors, when researched, are literary giants. Do not overlook the dusty and worn old book, you need to look deeper.
The same is true of the old sheet music that was prevalent in a long-ago time when people were accustomed to entertaining themselves, rather than of being the spoon-fed recipient of entertainment. The simple use of these old pieces of sheet music creates their value.
Antique glass and pottery has a value due to longevity. Something as fragile as depression glass or old bottles, will naturally have a value after having survived 100 years. And the unusually old-fashioned look of a piece can be priceless. The tureens that have seen family service from 70 years ago, have a fragile look and are valuable, even if worn.
Ephemera is also most interesting, because the life-duration of paper can be fleeting. Of course, paper represents the communication of a people in a time and place, offering very tangible glimpses into lifestyle, thinking, and events of the past.
This very exciting type of antique or collectible comes in many forms.
The cabinet photo is a pictorial history of those who were our ancestors, whether in fact or generally speaking. One would have a paucity of sensibility if these images of the past didn't touch one on some level.
The old news magazines tell of a past, often complete with photographs. Many old magazines capture the prosaic lives of the leaders who changed history and impacted millions of people. We might see Czar Nicholai of Russia riding his horse through brush in a field. You can see the leaders of Europe sharing a light and jocular moment with Hitler in 1935. You can see the fragile and rickety beginnings of air travel as brave people chose to fly in contraptions that seem to be made of an erector set. Who will place a value on these pieces of ephemera?
Bakelite was used extensively in the early to mid 1900's. These interesting pieces of everyday household items are represented by clocks, radios, and so forth. These items bring to mind a simple time when Americans were just beginning to feel wealth. This was when discretionary income could be used to make one's life a bit more fun, rather than just for sustenance. These pieces produce feelings of nostalgia, from which their value may be derived.
Postcards are one of the most touching memories from the past. Postcards may include beautiful artwork from the Victorian Era, post marks that attest to their antiquity, and personal messages from people who didn't have access to phone, email, or cars for visiting longer distances.
Holiday postcards are a memory of a time when the celebration was more of meaning and sensibility than of the commercial.
When one thinks of it, this is probably the best way to understand the value of a collectible or antique.
Have fun in your search!!
