Imagine you switch on your computer in the morning to see your important e-mails. However, it refuses to boot properly. You tried again and again, but in vain. What will you do in this situation? Yes, you should turn it off at night. It is also true that you should not turn it off and on after every work session. The reason is that like a car most of the mechanical failures occur during its booting process as computer uses most of its resources during booting. However, I will suggest you to turn off the machine in the night for the following reasons.
Power Bill
Your computer does not run on water. It needs electricity which is not free. Your computer equipped with large power supply, good video card and a large capacity hard disc spends 450 watts of electricity while running. If you leave it on for whole the nights you will have to pay a lot of excess amount as electricity bill every month.
Wear and tear
There are some mechanical parts in the computer like fans and hard disc drive mechanism. There will be much strain on these parts if you keep your computer machine running 24 hours a day. How many days the bearings and lubricants in these mechanical parts run in this situation?
Operating System
The operating system of your machine like Windows XP requires your system restarting as it has to perform many read and write operations during the shutting down process to keep computer healthy.
System Updates
System updates are lifeline of your computer. These system updates will be installed only when you shut down your PC although you may have turned on automatic system updates. If you will not shut down your computer for many days, you may deprive it of many system updates.
Security
Your computer may be more vulnerable to hackers and virus attacks if you keep it on and connected to Internet whole night. The risk may be more if you are using DSL or cable modem for broadband Internet access. In the office also where your computer may be connected to office network you should shut down it while leaving the office. Some one may steal your secret files or data after office hours also.
So it is always advisable to turn off your computer at nights while going to sleep to enjoy trouble free computing.
