Forensic science is a relatively young field which is very helpful in solving crimes. More commonly known today as forensics, forensic science can be traced back as far as the antiquity in China. A Chinese doctor named Xi Yuan Lu wrote a book that roughly guided readers how to identify a murder with a sickle. The book also gave details to investigators how to solve murders of different means.
In Australia, the modern form of forensics, albeit in crude form, was introduced in April 24, 1922. Forensic evidence was used to prosecute and convict Colin Ross of the rape and murder of 13-year old Alma Tirtschke. He was the first criminal in Australia to receive sentence with the help of forensic evidence.
Alma Tirtschke was reported missing in Melbourne on December 30, 1921. On the following day, patrolling constables in a well-known area for prostitutes found the body of a young girl bundled up in a blanket. No evidence such as traces of blood could be found despite the appearance of a brutal rape.
Few individuals owned cars in Melbourne, leading police to conclude that the rapist was not far from where the body was found. The police started to interrogate prostitutes in the area. Eventually, the investigation, based on eyewitnesses' accounts led to the doorstep of Colin Ross who owned a bar nearby. Ross pretended to help in the investigation by confirming that Alma was indeed seen in his bar on the day she was killed.
Further investigation provided information that Ross had a tendency to prefer young girls when he mentioned his liking for "young girls without feathers". Such discovery was almost certainly would have presented a strong indicator for the police that Ross was the killer, but they needed additional evidence to convict him successfully. Since the body was thoroughly cleaned, there was no forthcoming evidence from it. Police decided to search the house of Ross instead.
Red hairs were found at the house. The length and color matched those of the victim and early forensics identified the new evidence as human hair. Further, examination of the said hairs yielded information that they had been pulled out at the roots, suggesting that there was a struggle. The defense tried to challenge the new evidence as inconclusive and tried to discredit the young forensic team by letting them identify several hair samples. However, all provided hair samples by the defense were correctly identified by the experts. Ross was convicted. The conviction made it to Australia news at the time, hailing forensics as a new tool in solving crimes.
However, many experts today Colin Ross may be innocent because present forensic research finds out that hair samples used at the trial were misidentified. Whatever the cause of misidentification, Colin Ross was executed in 1922. An appeal for mercy was filed in 2006 to clear his name and to pardon him belatedly. The Victoria Chief Justice did pardon Ross in May 27, 2008.
The author is an established writer for many years on a wide range of topics in many major article directories. He writes news in Australia from time to time.
