Built in the 19th century to supply London with water, the Museum is recognised as the most important historic site of the water supply industry in Britain. It has both the Cornish engines, which are in their original engine houses, and the rotative engines, which have been collected by the museum trust from pumping stations across the country. The collection demonstrates the major developments in steam engine technology. They also have examples of diesel, electric, water and animal powered pumping engines.
One weekend a month the 90inch, Boulton & Watt or Maudslay and Bull engines is in steam demonstrating the full power of Waterworks Beam Engines.
Also at the Museum you can see how London's water supply has evolved from Roman times to the present day and ride on London's only steam railway featuring the museum's resident Wren class steam locomotive "Thomas Wicksteed" and Lister diesel locomotive "Alister".
There are variety of special events held at the museum throughout the year, including a Steam Model Show, a Historic Fire Engines Rally, a weekend showing how the Waterworks operated during the war and performances of Henry V by The Merely Players.
Kew Bridge Steam Museum, which is operated by an independent educational charity is located just on the north side of Kew Bridge, under the tall Victorian Stand Pipe Tower (the address is Green Dragon Lane, TW18 0EN). It is open every Tuesday to Sunday from 11am-5pm and on Bank Holiday Mondays. The steam railway is open every Sunday and on Bank Holiday Mondays from April to October.

Corliss Steam Engine $70.1 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles A Corliss steam engine (or Corliss engine) is a steam engine, fitted with rotary valves and with variable valve timing patented in 1849, invented by and named after the American engineer George Henry Corliss. Engines fitted with Corliss valve gear offered the best thermal efficiency of any type of stationary steam engine until the refinement of the uniflow steam engine and steam turbine in the 20th century. Corliss engines were generally about 30 percent more fuel efficient than conventional steam engines with fixed cutoff. This increased efficiency made steam power more economical than water power, allowing industrial development away from millponds. Corliss engines were typically used as stationary engines to provide mechanical power to line shafting in factories and mills and to drive dynamos to generate electricity.
