Often time we see the names and logos of big freight companies on the side of the semi trucks we pass on the road. But it may surprise you to know that the vast majority of freight is still hauled by independent truckers, or owner operators. Owning a tractor-trailer and running your own trucking business is comparable to running any small business. A lot of thought and planning must be put into starting your own hauling business, including the purchase of your own big rig.
Many truck owners opt for a lease contract with a brokerage or logistics company. By doing this, they ease the burden of having to find customers on their own. What that means is that the company is leasing your services, your truck and your time. However, this may also mean that you will be under contract to only haul that one company's freight and no other. Going with a brokerage/logistics company is probably a good choice for those who are just getting started in the industry until they gain more experience as an independent trucker.
Buying a truck can be a very emotional and frustrating process, but try to think practically. There are new luxury semis that can cost upwards of $125,000. However, when you add in some of the options and necessary upgrades, a big rig can cost well over $200,000. Essentially, buying a truck can cost as much as a house. Obviously, many of us can't afford that kind of money, especially those who are just starting out as owner-operators of an independent hauling company. I recommend looking for a used tractor with low mileage (around 200,000) and is still under drive train warranty.
When purchasing an older used or reconditioned tractor-trailer, you should familiarize yourself with reports critical to the overall value of the truck, such as the dyno testing and oil analysis. Be sure to check the warranty on the refurbished or rebuilt engine, and find out if the rebuild encompassed the complete engine (long) or just the top half (short). It is also important to check the truck's history. Was it in any major wrecks or accidents? Has it been rolled?
Check the tires. Are there signs of uneven wear? This can be a sign of steering problems. Is there any leakage from anywhere under the truck? Cracks? What about the welds on the frame rails? Do they look good? It is important to check anything that has been rebuilt, such as the rear of the truck, the drive shaft and clutch. Your safety is at stake, so make sure the used or reconditioned truck you purchase is in top-notch shape. Remember, if any of these reconditioned parts break down, it will be your responsibility to have them replaced - which is extremely expensive and can cost you valuable time that could've been spent out on the road.
Remember that some add-ons and options are necessary, but try not to throw in some of the expensive luxuries until you've achieved some success. Think of your trucking company as a business and conserve your cash and reinvest in yourself. Be safe and be smart, and in time you'll be able to have the truck of your dreams with all the amenities.
