Just about every little boy (and not a few girls, too) can remember playing with a large toy dump truck in his own version of a construction site. This usually consisted of a large mound of dirt and a hole from which the dirt came. For children, it invariably turned out to be a fun time, and many who played in that manner have actually gone on to real dump truck jobs in their adulthood.
For the most part, the job of driving a dump truck is primarily local in nature, unlike driving a large tractor truck and trailer, which is mostly a long-distance affair, with many hours spent on the road. Good dump truck owner/operators (or just operators) usually work much closer to home, in a 9 to 5 or some other sort of day job that requires the use of such a truck and its driver or operator.
Compensation when it comes to these kinds of jobs depends on a number of factors. Independent contractors may agree to a certain amount of money per certain volume of earth or other load hauled and then dumped. Others may work on a straight fee for service basis. Drivers working for a company generally receive the prevailing wage for such drivers in that region or area.
People who intend to become dump truck operators or owners and operators need to know that there's more to it than just sitting in the cab of the truck, raising and lowering the bed of the truck and the like. Most driving and operating jobs require a fair amount of experience of the driver, especially when it comes to the driving portion. That's why a commercial driver's license (a CDL) is usually needed.
Drivers of standard-size dump trucks normally take the driving training that'll enable them to pass the test to obtain a CDL Class B license. Those wishing to drive the big trucks, where the compensation tends to be higher because of the responsibilities and experience required, will need to obtain a Class A CDL. These are the trucks that feature a big semi-tractor with a large truck bed or trailer.
Dump truck drivers tend to gravitate towards certain types of truck driving jobs. Class A operators (owner-operators are those who own their own trucks and work as contractors or sub-contractors on a job) are normally seen on jobs that require a great deal of earth moving or hauling of one thing or another. Class B drivers tend to work at sites that require less heavy moving or lower volumes of work.
The number of dump truck jobs in a given geographic area depends on the health of certain industries, when talking about Class A-type jobs, especially when it has to do with construction. Class B drivers may be employed directly by a landscaping company or the like while Class A drivers tend to contract their services out, which is something they seem to prefer doing rather than working directly for a company.

The Operators $14.99 General Stanley McChrystal, the innovative, forward-thinking commanding general of international and U.S. forces in Afghanistan, was living large. He was better known to some as Big Stan, M4, Stan, and his loyal staff liked to call him a "rock star." During a spring 2010 trip across Europe to garner additional allied help for the war effort, McChrystal was accompanied by journalist Michael Hastings of Rolling Stone . For days, Hastings looked on as McChrystal and his staff let off steam, partying and openly bashing the Obama administration for what they saw as a lack of leadership. When Hastings's piece appeared a few months later, it set off a political firestorm: McChrystal was ordered to Washington, where he was fired unceremoniously. In The Operators , Hastings picks up where his Rolling Stone coup ended. He gives us a shocking behind-the-scenes portrait of our military commanders, their high-stakes maneuvers and often bitter bureaucratic infighting. Hastings takes us on patrol missions in the Afghan hinterlands, to late-night bull sessions of senior military advisors, to hotel bars where spies and expensive hookers participate in nation-building gone awry. And as he weighs the merits and failings of old-school generals and the so-called COINdinistas-the counterintelligence experts-Hastings draws back the curtain on a hellish complexity and, he fears, an unwinnable war. |
