Bale handlers are a type of farming equipment used to handle large round bales of a cereal crop. The bales are usually wrapped in protective plastic, generally black in colour in the UK, but it can vary. The idea behind having a custom built piece of machinery to handle a wrapped bale is not just to move it from one place to another, but to do that while not harming the protective wrapping.
This can be achieved by having a device with two protruding forks that go under the bales longitudinal axis, and can be adjusted in width through a double acting hydraulic cylinder to accommodate the size of any particular bale. To protect the bale and its protective plastic wrapping, the protruding forks can rotate freely to avoid any rubbing action that could tear the plastic.
In this way the bale finds its own level within the forks as it is lifted off the ground. As it settles in the forks, the forks rotate instead of rubbing and chafing the plastic. Providing that the operator of the bale handler is skilled in his or her task, this will normally result in a bale being moved without any damage whatsoever to either the bale or its protective plastic wrapping.
The protruding forks are attached to a box section that is rigid in structure and gives strength to the bale handlers. The mechanism, when mounted on a tractor, can be lowered to ground level and the two forks moved gently under the bale. The box section that the forks are attached to has a buffer plate to prevent damage to the end of the bale as bale handlers are moved forwards to collect the bale. The forks can then be adjusted for width and the bale can then be lifted safely to be transported to wherever it needs to go.
